Sony's Balanced Optical SteadyShot™ is a unique stabilizer with a gimbal mechanism that is about 13 times more effective than other optical systems. Capture smooth, professional-looking images, even at full zoom or while running with no need for bulky external gimbals.
Unlike conventional optical image stabilization using a single lens element, Sony's Balanced Optical SteadyShot manipulates the entire lens unit and image sensor together — effective even for high zoom and strong camera shake correction.
Typical optical image stabilizers shift only a single lens element and insufficiently compensate for blur at high zoom, or while walking or running. These also capture images in peripheral lens areas resulting in quality deterioration.
The gimbal mechanism in Balanced Optical SteadyShot shifts the entire lens unit and sensor. Around 13 times more effective, it captures stable images even at telephoto or walking, always through the clearest central lens area.

Integrated lens and image sensor motion
Sony has developed a powerful yet quiet mechanism for Balanced Optical SteadyShot. Two compact, energy-efficient motors manipulate the entire lens unit and image sensor vertically and horizontally, powerfully correcting camera-shake blur of pitch and yaw axes while a sophisticated algorithm compensates for blur caused by camera shake in roll axis.

Distinguishes camera shake from desired camera motion
Sony's software algorithm judges between undesired shake (corrected) and intentional motion (allowed). When the camera's angular velocity sensor detects camera shake, this system analyzes the unique vibration pattern in real time. Unintended shake is then separated from intentional movement, reducing any latency in tracking your intended movement.
Further support for Balanced Optical SteadyShot
Sony's Intelligent Active mode uses frame analysis to further enhance stabilization, compensating for shake across a full 5-axis to make it effective even while walking and running.
