Unable to locate the model number of the computer.

If the model number on a VAIO® computer cannot be found on the sticker located on the front, back or bottom of the computer , and the computer can be started into the operating system, there is a text file that can be accessed to show the model number.

IMPORTANT: This information applies only to computers using the operating systems listed below this article in the Applicable Products and Categories section.

NOTE:  If the computer cannot be started into the operating system and the sticker on the front, back or bottom of the computer is missing or cannot be read, service will be required.  Go to Product Repair. 

Follow the appropriate operating system procedure to access that file:

• Windows® 7 or Windows Vista®:
  1. Click the Start button and in the Search field, type model.txt, and then press the Enter key.
  2. In the Notepad window, the model number will be displayed.
     
• Windows® XP (or earlier):
  1. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  2. In the Run window, next to Open, type model.txt.
  3. Press the ENTER key.
  4. In the Notepad window, the model number will be displayed.
