Noise canceling doesn't work on my earbud headphones (WF-1000XM3)

IMPORTANT: The Noise canceling function is most effective for low frequency (bass) noise, such as the noise made by vehicles or air conditioning, but not all sounds can be completely canceled.

Make sure that the Noise Canceling function is turned on

There are a few ways to check if Noise Canceling is On:

    • Place both earbuds in the charging case, leave them for a few seconds, and then remove them from the charging case.
      • After they are removed from the charging case, the Noise canceling function will be on.
    • While wearing the headphones, tap the touch sensor until you hear Noise canceling.
      • In the default setting, tap the touch sensor to change the Ambient Sound Control function.
        • If your headphones don't switch to the Noise canceling function, try tapping one time quickly (about 0.3 seconds). If the contact time between the touch sensor and finger is too long, the mode switches to Quick Attention mode instead of the Noise canceling function.
        • If you assign the Google Assistant feature to your headphones and you want to use only one unit, use the one with the Google Assistant feature assigned.
    • Change the Noise canceling settings on the Sony | Headphones Connect app.

    Replace the earbud tips

Noise-canceling is ineffecive if your earbud headphones don't fit your ears properly. Select the appropriate size earbud tip that minimizes the ambient noise.

    • Be careful that you don't pinch the end of the earbud tip when you remove it.

      Remove earbuds

    • Attach the appropriate size.
Make sure it is attached all the way and isn't loose.

      Insert earbuds

Adjust the position to fit your ears

    • Slightly twist the headphones to slide the earbud deep into your ear.

    • Rotating it while lighly pulling up the upper part of your ear makes it easier to insert.

Make sure that Adaptive Sound Control is turned off

Check the Adaptive Sound Control settings on the Sony | Headphones Connect app. If Adaptive Sound Control is on, the effects of noise canceling may become weak. If it's on, we recommend turning it off.

    • Select the right arrow on the right side of the Status screen.

    • Move the slide bar of the Adaptive Sound Control setting to OFF

Note: The Adaptive Sound Control function detects your actions through the app and automatically switches the settings of the Ambient Sound Control. Because of this function, the Noise canceling function may change to the Adaptive Sound Control function, and you may notice that the Noise canceling effect is insufficient.
