Before You Start

Determine Whether or Not this Firmware Update is Needed for Your Digital Photo Frame

This update is only for DPF-D70 digital photo frames with firmware version lower than 1.12. If your firmware version is 1.12 or higher, then this update is not necessary.


Checking the version of your DPF-D70 firmware:


  1. Insert a Memory Stick® media with recorded images into the Memory Stick slot on the DPF-D70.
  2. Power on the digital photo frame.
  3. Press the "MENU" button.
  4. Use the arrow buttons to select "Various Settings" and then press the "ENTER" button.
  5. Use the arrow buttons to select "System Information" and then press the "ENTER" button.
  6. Check the version number listed:

    - If a version lower than 1.12 is listed: Please proceed with the steps below to download andperform the firmware update.
    - If version 1.12 or higher is listed: This firmware update is not necessary.
  7. Press the "ENTER" button to close the version number display.
  8. Press the "MENU" button.
  9. Power off the digital photo frame.

Important Notes

  • WARNING!! This utility is only for use with the Sony® DPF-D70 digital photo frame. Do notinstall this utility with any other model.
  • This update requires a computer with one of the following operating systems installed:
    • Windows Vista®
    • Windows® XP SP2
    • Windows 2000 Professional SP4 (installed with factory settings)
    • Mac OS X 10.4 (installed with factory settings)
  • This update requires one of the following types of recording media:
    • 16MB or greater Memory Stick® media or Memory Stick Duo™ media
    • 16MB or greater SD memory card
    • 16MB or greater xD Picture Card
    • 16MB or greater CompactFlash card
    Note: See "About the memory cards" in the Operating Instructions for more information about compatible recording media.
  • While performing the update, make sure the DPF-D70 is connected to AC power using the supplied ACadaptor. Loss of power during the updated may cause the DPF-D70 to malfunction and require service.
  • While performing the update, make sure the DPF-D70 and the AC adaptor are placed in a stable andsecure location to avoid them accidentally being disconnected.
  • Before performing the update, it is strongly recommended that you back up images that are saved in the DPF-D70 internal memory.
  • The steps to install the firmware update are the same whether you are using Memory Stick media, an SD memory card,CompactFlash card, or xD-Picture Card.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download & Install

Download and Installation Instructions

  1. Download the D70_V112.zip file to a temporary or download directory (please notethis directory for reference).
  2. Unzip the downloaded file:
    • Using Windows Vista operating system:
      1. Right-click the D70_V112.zip file.
      2. Click "Extract All".
      3. At the "Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders" window, click "Extract".

      Note: The D70_V112 folder will be created on your computer desktop.
    • Using Windows XP operating system:
      1. Right-click the D70_V112.zip file.
      2. Click "Extract All".
      3. At the "Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard" window, click"Next".
      4. Click "Next".
      5. Click "Finish".

      Note: The D70_V112 folder will be created on your computer desktop.
    • Using Windows 2000 Professional operating system: - Use a decompression tool to unzip the theD70_V112.zip file to your desktop. After you have unzipped the file, the D70_V112 folder will be created on yourdesktop.
    • Using Using Mac OS: - Double-click the D70_V112.zip file. The D70_V112 folderwill be created on your computer desktop.
    Note: The unzipped D70_V112 folder will contain the following update files and folders:
    • DPF_FW (folder)
    • VL_FW (folder)
    • DLoader.VUP (file)
    • ISP.vup (file)
    • VISP.vup (file)
    • SFrame.jpg (file)
  3. Prepare the recording media:

    Prepare an initialized (formatted) memory card. For details about how to initialize (format) it, please see the Operating Instructions of your digital camera.

    Notes:
    • Please use a memory card that has been initialized (formatted) by your digital camera.
      Note: For Memory Stick media, you can use the Sony Memory Stick Formatter software (Windows operating systems only).
    • We do not recommend initializing (formatting) the memory card with a computer, as the DPF-D70 may not recognize thememory card, depending on the initialization format.
    • If you have no choice but to use a memory card that has been initialized with a computer, test it by copying a JPEGimage file to it and then see if it displays correctly on the DPF-D70.
    • IMPORTANT: The firmware update may fail if the memory card contains other files as well asthe update file. You should therefore always use a memory card that has just been initialized (formatted).
  4. Copy the update file to the memory card using one of the following methods:
    • If your computer has a card slot that is compatible with your recording media, or if you have a card reader that is compatible with your recording media:
      1. Insert the camera-formatted memory card into the card slot of your computer or card reader.
      2. Open the D70_V112 folder on your computer desktop then drag and drop the update files and folders to the rootfolder of the memory card.
        IMPORTANT: Do not create a folder on the memory card. Drag and drop the update files and foldersdirectly to the root folder of the memory card.
    • If your computer does not have a card slot that is compatible with your recording media:
      1. Insert a formatted memory card in your digital camera.
      2. Connect your digital camera to your computer.
      3. Open the D70_V112 folder on your computer desktop then drag and drop the update files and folders to the rootfolder of the memory card.
        IMPORTANT: Do not create a folder on the memory card. Drag and drop the update files and foldersdirectly to the root folder of the memory card.
      Note: See your digital camera's Operating Instructions for more details about how to connect your camera to a computer and how to copy to the memory card.
  5. Update the firmware:
    1. Maker sure that the DPF-D70 is powered off.
      Note: The power button is red when the power is off.
    2. Insert the memory card with the update files into the card slot on the DPF-D70.
    3. Press and hold the "View Mode" button and simultaneously press and release the "Power" button.
    4. Continue to press the "View Mode" button until the following message is displayed at the top right of theDPF-D70 screen.

      If the above display does not appear on the DPF-D70 screen after 10 seconds, or if the display is distorted, remove the ACadaptor from the digital photo frame and re-insert it. Check that the (power) button is red, and start the update processagain from "Update the firmware".
      Note: If the above display still does not appear on the DPF-D70 screen, please call Sony Supportat 800-222-7669 for further assistance.
    5. Press the "ENTER" button. After a few seconds, check to see that the following message is displayed at thetop right of the DPF-D70 screen.

      If the above display does not appear on the DPF-D70 screen after 10 seconds, or if the display is distorted, remove the ACadaptor from the digital photo frame and re-insert it. Check that the (power) button is red, and start the update processagain from "Update the firmware".
      Note: If the above display still does not appear on the DPF-D70 screen, please call Sony Supportat 800-222-7669 for further assistance.
    6. Press the "ENTER" button. The following message is displayed at the top right of the DPF-D70 screen and thefirmware update is written to the DPF-D70.
      Note: It takes about 10 seconds to write the firmware update.

      Error Notes:
      • If "No update file found." error message is displayed, the update files are not on the memory card. Copythe update files to the memory card and repeat the Update the Firmware procedure.
      • If "Update failed."error message is displayed, the memory card has come out during the update.
        WARNING!! Do not power off the DPF-D70. Powering off the digital photo frame may cause it to malfunction.
        1. Press the "ENTER" button. The following message is displayed at the top right of the DPF-D70screen.

        2. Reinsert the memory card with the update files into the card slot on the DPF-D70.
        3. Press the "ENTER" button. The following message will display at the top right of the DPF-D70 screenand the update will automatically restart.

        4. If the issue persists, try the following:
          • Repeat the above procedure several times.
          • Initialize (format) the memory card again and repeat the update process from the beginning.
          • Try to perform the update using a different memory card.
        5. If the issue is still not resolved, please call Sony Support at 800-222-7669 for further assistance.
    7. The following screen is displayed when the firmware update finishes writing to the DPF-D70.

      Note: Writing the update takes about 18 seconds.
    8. When the firmware update is complete, the following message is displayed for a few seconds, and then the DPF-D70automatically powers off.

    9. Remove the memory card from the DPF-D70.
  6. If the images stored in the internal memory have been lost or damaged during the update process, restore them from thebackup copy you made before performing the update.

Confirm the Successful Update (optional)

  1. Power on the digital photo frame.
  2. Press the "MENU" button.
  3. Use the arrow buttons to select "Various Settings" and then press the "ENTER" button.
  4. Use the arrow buttons to select "System Information" and then press the "ENTER" button.
  5. Check the version number listed:

    If version 1.12 is listed the firmware was successfully updated.
  6. Press the "ENTER" button to close the version number display.
  7. Press the "MENU" button.
  8. Power off the digital photo frame.
