Test if your remote control sends an infrared (IR) signal
An IR remote control sends out infrared light signals that the human eye can't see. This light may be visible for testing with the use of a digital camera, digital camcorder, and some smartphone cameras.
Required for testing
You'll need one of the following devices to test if your remote control sends infrared signals:
- Digital still camera or camcorder
- A smartphone that's able to display infrared light.
Note:
-
When using a smartphone, this test is only reliable if you have confirmed with another IR remote that your smartphone camera can see the IR light. Many of today’s smartphones have IR filters on the camera that prevent IR light from being displayed even when the remote is working properly.
-
Check for an IR signal from your remote control
- Turn on your camera/camcorder or smartphone camera.
- Point the end of the remote control towards your camera.
- For iPhone® users: iPhones have an IR filter, so be sure to place the remote within 2" of the iPhone camera.
- Press and hold one of the remote control buttons while looking at the viewfinder or screen of your camera/camcorder or smartphone.
Note: Some remote controls only send an IR signal when pressing the Power button. If you have a Bluetooth® remote control, such as the RMF-TX500U, RMF-TX600U, or RMF-TX611U, or you're not sure, press the green Power button to test for an IR signal.
- If you see a light on your camera/camcorder or smartphone when pressing a button on your remote control, the remote is sending an IR signal as it should.
If you don't see a light, check the following:- You may be using a smartphone that filters the IR light.
Note: This is not a reliable test if you're using a smartphone that you have not confirmed with another IR remote that it can see the IR light.
- Try pressing the green POWER on the remote. Some Bluetooth remotes only send an IR signal from the power button.
- If there's no light or it's dim, the batteries may be low. Replace the batteries and try again.
- You may be using a smartphone that filters the IR light.
Notes:
- If you see the infrared light even without pressing a button, one of the remote buttons may be stuck and other buttons may no longer work. Try the following steps to resolve the issue:
- Remove the batteries.
- Press and release each button a couple of times to see if you can free the stuck button.
- Reinsert the batteries and test the remote again.
- If you continue to see a light even when you don't press a button, replace the remote control.
- Make sure to replace your remote with the same model.  Go to Parts and Accessories.
