What is 3D TV?
NOTE: Not all Sony® TVs have 3D capabilities. To see if your TV has 3D capabilities, check the specifications or instructions manual supplied with the product. Manuals are posted on your model support page.
Sony had introduced two types of 3D televisions that can bring a "3D experience of a movie theater" in to your home. These 3D TVs deliver three-dimensional video in one of these two technologies: Active 3D and Passive 3D.
Active-shutter 3D or Active 3D works by displaying a full high definition (HD) and high quality 3D images alternately on the screen. The 3D active glasses control which picture is perceived by which eye by alternating from opaque to transparent. To capture 3D experience using 3D active glasses, when the left image in the 3D video is displayed on the screen, the left lens is transparent. As the screen changes to the right image, the lens turns opaque and the right lens changes to transparent.
Active glasses are powered using its own battery(s) and that power is used to electronically block or shutter first the left lens then the right lens. These glasses incorporate LCD lenses which sync to alternating frames displayed on the TV screen.
On the other hand, passive 3D is very similar to the 3D technology used in the movie theaters. The 3D passive glasses display both left and right frames simultaneously. Passive 3D TVs have a special filter on the screen that works with the polarized lenses in the glasses to block out either the even or odd lines on a 3D content. One eye only sees the odd lines and the other eye only sees the even line of the picture to produce a viewable 3D image.
The passive glasses don't require a power source or batteries to view a 3D content.
In addition, Sony had developed 3D compatibility on other products such as Blu-ray Disc® players, Playstation® 3 gaming console, and VAIO® computers to provide a multitude of ways in which 3D content can be enjoyed at home.
